TOURISTS fled in horror as a six foot shark attacked a swimmer at a popular resort in Mallorca sparking panic across the beach.
Swimmers were immediately ordered out of the water at Estanys beach in Colònia de Sant Jordi after the killing machine struck.
The incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon near one of most popular spots along the beach, which was packed.
A man suffered injuries to his arm after the female shark pounced, but he is not thought to have been seriously wounded.
Officials claim he received a ‘mild’ injury from the beast, caused by its rough scales rather than its deadly teeth.
The attack on the victim, a foreign tourist, sparked panic across the beach as families and children looked on in horror.
Those in the sea for a dip immediately ran back to shore after the man raised the alarm when he spied the predator.
Lifeguards tried to tempt the carnivore back to deeper waters by using an aqua scooter, but claim it ‘disappeared towards a cove’.
The Civil Guard rushed to the scene, backed up by a ship from the Maritime Service of the Armed Institute.
And experts from the Palma Aquarium were put on standby in case they were needed at the beach.
The incident is the third recent shark sighting in the area, and after the attack red flags went up at nearby beaches.
Sharks were also spotted in Cala Major and Playa de Palma.
Over the past few weeks the trio of sightings in the waters around Mallorca have forced tourists to be on high alert.
But despite the danger some have continually ignored the warning signs and headed into the water.
The shark’s presence so close to the shore is unusual, with theories suggesting hot weather or the tides may have caused it to stray into the shallows.
Others have claimed the killers could be sick or disorientated, with some witnesses reporting the beast was in a ‘comatosed’ state.
Last month another 6ft shark was found in the waters near Calvià and Palma.
